Mid-April is a funny sort of limbo. The garden is doing things — things you definitely didn't plan for — and the evenings are light enough to feel promising but still cool enough to send you back inside for a blanket at half past seven. We've been in that gap all week: one foot in spring, one foot firmly on the sofa.
It felt like the right moment to finally deal with the corner of the sitting room that's been “nearly sorted” since January. You know the one.
This week
The Weekend Nook: How to Build a Reading Corner for Under £50
There is a particular kind of corner — usually behind a door, or beside a radiator, or in that alcove that never quite became a bookshelf — that has enormous potential and absolutely no follow-through. We've all got one. This week we put together a proper guide to turning that corner into something genuinely lovely. A lamp that actually lights the page. A cushion that isn't decorative in the bad way. A throw that stays put. Under fifty pounds, tested and honestly reviewed.
The 8pm Phone Curfew: What Actually Happened
We tried it. One week, screens off at 8pm, no exceptions (well, one exception — we'll tell you about it). What filled the evenings instead was surprising, occasionally uncomfortable, and mostly rather good.
Five Suppers That Basically Cook Themselves
Not batch cooking. Not meal prep. Just five weeknight suppers where the active effort — chopping, stirring, standing near a hob — is genuinely under ten minutes. The sixth one needs a bit more attention, but we've included it anyway because it's too good to leave out.
One useful thing
A good reading lamp makes everything better. We've been testing the EYOCEAN LED Desk Lamp for the past fortnight — it has a warm-to-cool colour range (3000K to 5500K), a gooseneck arm that actually reaches where you need it, and it doesn't make you feel like you're being interrogated. Stepless dimming, clamp mount, under £40. Genuinely useful.
